Pacific Coast Highway, USA

The Pacific Coast Highway, also known as California State Route 1 (SR 1), is one of the most iconic and scenic drives in the United States. The drive stretches 650 miles up the western coast of California and takes you through some of the state's most stunning landscapes, from the redwood forests of the north to the sun-drenched beaches of the south. Some of the best highlights include the artistic community of Carmel-by-the-Sea, beautiful Big Sur, Santa Barbara with its Spanish colonial architecture and the vibrant city of Los Angeles.

Great Ocean Road, Australia

The Great Ocean Road is one of Australia's most scenic and iconic coastal drives, stretching approximately 151 miles along the southern coast. It’s renowned for its stunning natural beauty and offers every traveler a diverse range of landscapes and experiences. The highlight of the Great Ocean Road is undoubtedly the Twelve Apostles, a collection of limestone stacks rising from the Southern Ocean. Other must-see highlights include the Loch Ard Gorge, the London Arch, and the lush Otway Ranges rainforest.

Ring Road, Iceland

Also known as Route 1, the Ring Road is a circular highway that encircles the entire island of Iceland, making it one of the most epic road trips in the world and one of my personal favorites. This iconic route spans 828 miles around the island, which is roughly the same size as my home state of Ohio, and takes you through some of Iceland's most breathtaking landscapes, from glaciers and volcanoes to waterfalls and geothermal springs. Driving the Ring Road allows you to witness some of the best highlights, including the powerful Skogafoss and Seljalandsfoss waterfalls, the black sand beaches of Vik, the Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon, and the geothermal wonders of Lake Myvatn.

Route 66, USA

Initially established in 1926, Route 66 served as a major route for westward migration during the Great Depression and has since become a symbol of adventure. Often referred to as the "Main Street of America" or the "Mother Road," it is one of the most legendary roadways in the United States. Spanning approximately 2,448 miles from Chicago, Illinois, to Santa Monica, California, this historic highway takes travelers on a nostalgic journey through the heart of America. The route is dotted with neon signs, old motels, and quirky landmarks. Highlights along the way include the Grand Canyon, the Cadillac Ranch in Texas, and the Santa Monica Pier.

Wild Atlantic Way, Ireland

Another personal favorite of mine here at Ali’s Happy Adventure is the Wild Atlantic Way in Ireland. Starting in County Donegal in the north and winding its way down to County Cork in the south, the Wild Atlantic Way offers an opportunity to explore Ireland's diverse and dramatic landscapes with a front-row seat. Along the drive, you'll encounter friendly locals, vibrant Irish culture, and traditional pubs where you can savor delicious seafood and listen to traditional music. Highlights include the majestic Cliffs of Moher, the Dingle Peninsula, Connemara National Park, and the picturesque Ring of Kerry.

Amalfi Coast, Italy

Known for its dramatic cliffs, picturesque villages, and stunning vistas, the Amalfi Coast is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the world's most unforgettable road trips. Driving along the winding coastal road, you are treated to breathtaking panoramas of the Mediterranean Sea and the rugged cliffs that plunge into the azure waters below. Some of the best highlights along the route include Positano, with its pastel-colored houses, Amalfi, for its medieval architecture and impressive Duomo, and Ravello, perched high above the coast, with its beautiful gardens and panoramic views.

Garden Route, South Africa

Spanning 124 miles from Mossel Bay in the Western Cape to Storms River in the Eastern Cape, the Garden Route in South Africa is renowned for its landscapes, abundant wildlife, and charming towns. Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty of activities to enjoy, including hiking, whale watching, and bungee jumping from the world's highest commercial bridge bungee in Bloukrans. The Garden Route also has several nature reserves and national parks, including the Tsitsikamma National Park. Along the route, you can explore picturesque towns such as Knysna, with its famous lagoon, and Plettenberg Bay, known for its beautiful beaches.

Transfagarasan Highway, Romania

Finally, located in one of my favorite countries in the world is the Transfagrasan Highway in Romania. Located in the Southern Carpathians of Romania, the route stretches 90 miles, crossing the Fagaras Mountains (my previous home in Romania for three months). The Transfagarasan Highway is famous for being one of the most challenging and awe-inspiring driving routes in the world. But, as you ascend to higher altitudes, you are rewarded with breathtaking panoramas of the mountains and valleys.

As we come to the end of this exhilarating road trip through the world's most scenic drives, it's evident that these unforgettable journeys hold the power to leave a lasting impression on travelers. The allure of the open road and the endless discoveries that await are a constant reminder of the power of travel. Whether you're seeking adventure, serenity, or a chance to connect with nature, these road trips promise an experience like no other.
